Intent

At Oxhey Wood Primary School, we provide a high-quality mathematics curriculum that develops resilient, confident mathematicians using the HFL Essentials Mathematics Framework to ensure children build secure conceptual knowledge, develop their fluency and apply their mathematical thinking to a range of situations. This scheme was chosen to enable our children to reason, explain, justify and challenge ideas. Through the schemes sentence stems, structured practice and pictorial representations, pupils learn to articulate their thinking and develop their confidence to engage in mathematical discussions. We are strong believers that every child at Oxhey Wood is a mathematician and the HFL Essentials scheme supports all our learners to achieve success through the CPA approach, the use of manipulatives and adaptive teaching. Our aim is to ensure all children are ready for the next stage in their mathematical journey and ensure they are equipped with the essential skills and knowledge for future learning and everyday life. Using the mastery approach, our children leave us with the curiosity, ability to spot patterns and tackle challenges with determination and curiosity.

Implementation

Our mathematics curriculum, from EYFS to Year 6, follows the HFL Essentials Framework to ensure progression of key skills and knowledge. To enhance learning, we complement this with White Rose, NCETM, NRICH and other resources to develop curiosity. At Oxhey Wood, we implement this in a variety of different ways:

· Daily mathematics lessons following the HFL Essentials Framework

· Fluency sessions to develop key fundamental skills and knowledge

· Focused times table sessions weekly

· Interventions to address misconceptions and gaps in learning using teaching assessment

The implementation of the scheme ensures:

· Well-structured progression of key skills and knowledge which are taught in a logical order and revisited through fluency sessions.

· High quality teaching by ensuring a mastery approach that incorporates modelling, guided practice and independent application. This approach also involves the CPA approach and staff choose purposeful manipulatives to support and deepen children’s learning and understanding.

· Ongoing formative assessment and end of term summative assessments. This supports teachers to track progress and identify pupils who require interventions or challenge

· A vocabulary rich learning environment and working walls that support current learning

· Using the mastery approach, all children move at broadly the same pace. Teachers adapt their instructions through questioning, scaffolds and targeted support. Sometimes, if a child is working significantly below their age-related expectations, we may think carefully about how best we can meet the child’s needs which may result in a different approach.

Impact

The implementation of the HFL Essentials Framework ensures that pupils make good progress and develop the skills and knowledge necessary for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school. The impact of the HFL Essentials and high-quality teaching can be seen through a plethora of different ways.

· The use of formative assessment during teacher to ensure all children understand key concepts and misconceptions are addressed. At the end of lessons, work is marked in accordance with the marking policy and lessons are adapted where necessary in light of this data.

· Summative assessments show the good progress our children make from their starting points

· End of Key Stage 2 SAT data – the children at Oxhey Wood leave school in readiness for Key Stage 3.

· The Multiplication Test and the Oxhey Wood Times Table Challenge shows that children are recalling key facts and applying them.

· Pupils’ retention of knowledge and their ability to apply this to a variety of situations and other subjects.

· At Oxhey Wood, we have confident and fluent mathematicians who can reason, justify, explain and challenge. They can recall facts rapidly and discuss a variety of different and effective methods.

· Pupils speak positively and highly about mathematics at Oxhey Wood. They show enthusiasm, enjoyment and the willingness to take risks in their lessons. The children have a positive mindset and show perseverance in lessons when approaching a challenge.

· Regular monitoring (book looks, lesson visits, pupil voice) demonstrates that the HFL Essentials Framework is embedded in the school whilst staff also feel they have some autonomy to support all learners in their class. This has ensured high standards across the school.
