Intent

At Oxhey Wood, we are committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident, fluent reader. To support this, we use Monster Phonics across Early Years, Key Stage 1, and as an intervention tool in Key Stage 2. Monster Phonics is a fun, multi-sensory and highly effective phonics programme validated by the Department for Education. Its engaging characters and colour-coding system make learning to read accessible and enjoyable for all children. You can meet the monsters here via the Monster Phonics website: Colour Coding And Multi-Sensory Approach - Monster Phonics

Implementation

We follow the Monster Phonics systematic synthetic phonics approach to teach children how to read. This includes:

· Understanding Phonic Sounds: Children begin by recognising and saying individual phonic sounds.

· Blending Sounds to Read: They learn to blend these sounds together to read words, building fluency and confidence.

· Daily Practice and Clear Progression: Lessons follow a structured sequence, moving from simple to more complex phonics patterns.

To support reading development, children access fully decodable Monster Phonics books matched to their phonics stage. These texts focus on decoding rather than guessing, helping children build secure reading skills.

Children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 also receive individual logins for Monster Phonics e-books, enabling them to read online at home alongside their school reading books.
