Intent – Why do we teach music?
At Oxhey Wood we ensure that through the teaching of our music curriculum all learners are:
- Being equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop their musical abilities
- Gaining confidence to become performers of music, expert composers and attentive listeners
- Able to explore a wide range of musical genres that originate from a variety of different cultures and generations
- Having the opportunity to engage in singing, playing a range of instruments alongside creating and appraising pieces of music
- Building on lifelong skills such as creativity, confidence and self-expression as well as social skills and teamwork
Implementation –How do we teach music?
At Oxhey Wood we follow the Charanga Primary Music curriculum. Within this scheme each year group has access to a range of songs, and genres, where they can explore by singing and playing instruments such as recorders, percussion instruments and glockenspiels. Children have the opportunity to explore each of these throughout the school year. There is clear progression in skills starting from Reception all the way to Year 6. In Year 3 the children apply their previous knowledge to learning the ukelele with a specialist music teacher. Each week we have a singing assembly where we learn a selection of songs that have links to celebrations throughout the year, as well as local events. We have many opportunities to practice the key skill of musical performance during events such as school concerts, assemblies and performances to the local community.
