Design and Technology

At Oxhey Wood we ensure that Design and Technology (DT) is an inspiring, hands-on experience that will help pupils develop their skills in:

· Cooking and nutrition: discovering where food comes from; creating a balanced diet; following kitchen hygiene and safety; developing preparation and cooking skills; following a recipe.

· Mechanisms: using cams, followers, levers and sliders to mimic natural movements.

· Structures: learning about the properties of materials; improving a structure’s strength and stability; reinforcing structures.

· Textiles: using fabric techniques to fasten, sew and decorate.

· Electrical systems: creating electrical products using series circuits, circuit components, circuit diagrams and symbols.

· Digital world: programming products to perform tasks; developing 2D and 3D designs and models using CAD software.

These skills will be developed from Early Years through to Year 6.

Teaching DT is essential for fostering creativity, problem solving skills, practical knowledge in pupils and preparing them for future challenges. To ensure that pupils will achieve this they will learn how to take risks, become resourceful and to innovate. They will design, make and evaluate past and present design technology in lessons to develop a critical understanding of its impact and the impact on daily life and the wider world.

Our curriculum aims are implemented from Kapow Primary’s scheme of work. The scheme supports us in developing our subject knowledge and skills, enabling the delivery of engaging, well-informed lessons with confidence. The curriculum is designed to be both accessible and ambitious, ensuring all learners’ full participation and potential achievement.
